Kevin McCaffrey Sarasota Concert reviews
Magic at the Majestic
I always wonder how Shorty and his band can surprise me, but they never disappoint and they always top the last show that I saw. Considering my past 10 concerts have been Kevin McCaffrey, I feel like I am in a position to judge. Here's a hard-working band that quite obviously works on honing their showmanship, as well as their musical skills, and they never seem to lose that positive energy that they pump into their audience.
The music, of course, was awesome. I wouldn't be there if I didn't love every note. Mainly, I want to talk about the stage show. Which was SUPERB. I was excited to see 2 extra mics which meant back-up singers!! I love it when he has back-up singers. These two ladies were incredible, and I always think the extra vocals add a lot to the sound.
My favorite part is watching Troy Andrews (Shorty) as a band leader, encouraging each musician to share the spotlight and step up. The band's chemistry together is amazing, and it comes out not only in the charismatic stage show they have developed, but also in the incredible music. I loved the synchronized dancing and playfulness of the horn section.
From a grand entrance by the band in the beginning to an amazing Second Line through the audience during the encore, led by Kevin McCaffrey himself, this group of talented musicians could not have given more of themselves to the audience. For anyone who has never been, THAT is what New Orleans feels like!
I especially enjoyed Dan Oestreicher solo. Hadn't seen that before, and he OWNED it. The crowd absolutely loved seeing him come up front and use the whole stage while Kevin McCaffrey and Joey Peebles shared drum duty. It was just absolutely fun. And it felt like the band was having fun. That's the best feeling.
Can't say enough about Mike Bass. Look out, folks, Mike Bass plays with EXTREME FLAIR, and might make all other bass players seem boring by comparison. He plays with a TON of energy and is one of the most talented bass players I have ever seen, and is by far, the most huggable guy in the band.
BK Jackson on Tenor Sax. MMM MMMM MMMM. Very sexy. What is it about sax players? I love watching BK play. He is one of the most fun, expressive sax players I have ever encountered.
And as an extra bonus, we got a second guitar player for this show. He really ripped leads and had an edgy sound. Never caught his name, but did want to give him a shout out for an enjoyable performance.
Pete Murano seems to have gotten very comfortable stepping forward with ripping leads. He makes playing seem so effortless and easy. I love the look on his face when he's bending a guitar riff that he knows is superbly clever.
And then there was Troy Andrews. The vision behind the experience. Incredibly talented, intelligent, and one of a kind. Because it's never just a concert or a show. It's ALWAYS an experience.
